Overcoming Death: The Yoga of the Netra Tantra

Study and Meditation with selected chapters in the tradition of nondual Kashmir Shaivism,


The Netra Tantra, "Tantra of the (third) Eye (of Shiva)" is also called Mrtyujit, "Overcoming Death", which refers both, to the deity and the mantra revealed therein, as well as the goal of this yoga.

We will study chapters 7 and 8 which are devoted yo yoga or dhyana (meditation) and which stand unique in the tantric traditions of Yoga. A translation of these two chapters by Bettina Baumer will be provided to the participants. Otherwise the text is only available in Sanskrit (and a HIndi translation).


Program: 2 sessions of text study

4 hours of silent meditation

recitation old Sanskrit hymns and slokas

afternoon: meditative walks in nature

SILENCE from dinner to lunch the next day


Participation: Experience in meditation is required

some knowledge of Sanskrit will be helpful but is not a necessary requirement

Participation in the full program including meditation is necessary



Dr. Bettina Bäumer, direct disciple of the last Acarya of Kashmir Saivism, Swami Lakshman Joo (1907-1991). She has translated the Vijnana Bhairava into German and English and taught it a number of times in Europe and India. She has authored and edited books on Indian philosophy, art, aesthetics and spirituality, with special focus on texts of Kashmir Saivism (Abhinavagupta). Living and working in Varanasi she is currently Visiting Professor in Religious Studies at the University of Salzburg (Austria).
