In October 2009, Deer Park launched a new initiative called the Local Wisdom Project, aimed at exploring the traditional knowledge and skills of the local area and encouraging local youth to preserve and value this wisdom of their elders, in the face of rapid social change. This project is closely interconnected with Deer Park’s ecology work, as it emphasizes sustainable living and preservation of nature.

Under the umbrella of the Local Wisdom Project, a team of local Indian youths are being trained to gather and document information, and to conduct workshops for school children, on the following topics:

This project is still in its early stages, but there has been an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from the local youth volunteers and school children who have been involved so far. We are in the process of forming an advisory committee with community leaders, school teachers and resource people who have knowledge of traditional wisdom and local eco system, to support the project. Several weekend workshops for local children have already been held, and the Local Wisdom team is planning further field trips, residential camps and a Himachali Youth Festival.
